The Designer’ s Story
Born and raised in Romania, Mihaela Ciupei was inspired by her grandfather’s tailoring skills. At the age of 13 she received a gift from her aunt, an old sewing machine. Later, the future Moontess designer wanted to quit high school to dedicate her time in learning more about fashion, but her father encouraged her to stay in school by enrolling her to Cluj Arts School in 1998, where she would take Fashion Design classes. One year later, Mihaela graduated high school and began working at East Company as a seamstress, learning how to use sewing machines, construct and create swimsuits and lingerie patterns for fashion brands such as: Chiarugi, Emilio Pucci, and Guess.
In 2001 she impressed the East Company management with her designs skills during the Cluj Arts School graduation fashion show. She was then promoted as the designer of David Corral, an East Company brand. Soon after, Mihaela was offered to visit the company headquarters in Italy for training, where she had the opportunity to attend designer meetings and fitting sessions. In 2002 she became a freelance designer in Romania by tailoring from home for her private customers. Designing and making clothes was both her passion and job.
In 2003, Mihaela moved to the USA to work her way into the fashion industry. In 2008 she created the name Moontess for her fashion designs, now a registered trademark in the USA. In 2010, she received her Bachelor’s of Science in Apparel Design from The Art Institute of Portland. Ever since, her career quickly launched and her work is seen in many fashion shows and tradeshow events such as New York Passion for Fashion, Portland Fashion Week, WWDMAGIC, FashionXT, and more. Her journey has been the inspiration of the company and it will continue to grow and cater to women seeking high quality fashionable beachwear and clothes.
